Well, this post has taken me some time to write 😅 Back in March, my team had a meetup in Seoul, South Korea. I went a couple days early to adjust to the time change and explore a bit more on my own.
Day 0 — Arrival

Day 1 — Classic tourist
The first three photos are from 경복궁 Gyeongbokgung, the main palace of the Joseon dynasty. You can get free admission if you dress in hanbok, so there are a lot of rental places and you can see about half the people were dressed up. I did a tour, it was nice to be guided through. It was also funny to see that the throne room really does look like it does in the kdramas.

Day 2 — All the walking
My main outing for this day was walking — the first three photos are from the Ihwa Mural Village, which is a neighborhood full of public art, murals and sculptures. This connected up with the old city wall, which I then followed down to the east gate & 동대문 Dongdaemun. I walked through the DDP, and then walked back to Myeongdong. I almost ate at a pocha on my walk back, and I regret not doing it now.

Day 3 — oniwassant & team
I had to meet up with my team in the afternoon, so I didn’t have time to do anything big. I did take a trip to 누데이크 NUDAKE to get a very ridiculous croissant— the 오니와상: oniwassant. It had a kimchi-bacon creamy cheese filling, and was surprisingly tasty (not just for the photo).
![A display of triangle-shaped pastry swirled with layers like a croissant, topped with a cheese cream. Other pastries are on display in the background.](https://i0.wp.com/ryelle.codes/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/PXL_20240318_032925527.jpg?resize=771%2C1024&ssl=1)

I made it to the hotel in Hongdae, Local Sitch. It was an interesting mix of coworking space and hotel, so it was comfortable to sit around and chat or work. At this point I also stopped taking as many photos 🤷🏼
⬅️ For dinner, since our vegetarian hadn’t arrived yet, we went out for KBBQ. The staff grilled it for us (mostly). Definitely a good first group dinner.
Days 4-7 — the meetup
Typically we met for coffee in the morning, did some work & had discussions. Went for brunch, continued conversations. Went to a cafe, co-worked some for the afternoon. Then we’d see some sights and have dinner. I don’t have day-by-day photos, but here’s a collection.

⬅️ One evening we took a cable car up to Namsan Tower. We just caught sunset. This is a panorama video of the view.

Day 8
My flight wasn’t until the evening, so I had time to walk around and get some lunch in Hongdae. There were plenty of street vendors, though I once again missed my chance for some street food (too full from lunch 😞).
![A brightly painted street with a large pedestrian walkway down the center. Shops and restaurants line the street.](https://i0.wp.com/ryelle.codes/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/PXL_20240323_035022150.jpg?resize=1024%2C771&ssl=1)
Pretty much as soon as I got back home, I wanted to go back. It took me almost the whole trip before I really said anything in Korean, and I’m still frustrated about that. Maybe going back without a Korean speaker will motivate me more 😆
A note from today: I wrote most of this back in April but never posted it. So here we are, late but published. And Mel & I do have vague plans to do a Japan & Korea trip next fall, still working out the details (dates & locations). Let me know if you have recommendations for either 🙂
